About

The Sports Equity Project uses data provided by Division I public schools to track disparities in spending on college athletics. Our mission is to add transparency to how college sports teams are funded, especially differences between men’s and women’s sports in key areas, such as marketing, equipment, travel, etc. to shed light on imbalances and allow athletes and supporters to advocate for equity.

Our Mission

At the core of our mission is providing access to funding benchmarks that schools report to the NCAA. Access to the data can empower athletes, coaches, schools and supporters to negotiate more equitable spending. We also work with news organizations and researchers interested in exploring how money is spent in college athletes, and support that work that uses our data by linking to those stories on our site.

The project is supported by Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication and the Knight Foundation, in cooperation with the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, though endorsement of any news item linked on our website is not implied.
